One Word at a Time

Whispering Wisdom

Who I Am:

I currently work as a mental health counselor and registered play therapist, and I absolutely love what I do. I work with kids, teens, adults, couples, families and groups. I am a co-owner of a private practice group, and I experience and learn something new daily. In my free time, I enjoy reading non-fiction, writing, and being creative – mostly through scrapbooking. I was raised in a Christian home on a small acreage in the Midwest and I reside just a few miles from where I grew up. I am blessed to have my large family all close together. My three sons are now all adults and venturing off and attempting to be independent, productive community members. My husband and I are getting used to the idea of being empty nesters – my husband, more than me!

I come to the table as a daughter, sister, mother, wife, aunt, teacher and counselor. I have worn many hats in the 40ish years I have been alive, and I have been given many opportunities to earn a little wisdom along the way. I say “earn” wisdom, because I believe we earn our wisdom through learning lessons as we go through life. One of my favorite sayings I heard from Oprah several years ago is, “when we know better, we do better”. I have made this one of my mantras, which has helped to promote growth versus self-criticism. I am so excited to begin this new journey – to open discussions, to teach, and to learn from those of you who will choose to follow and contribute to this blog!

Wake Up!

Sunday in church I talked about a revolution. Having the word church and revolution in the same sentence seems somewhat radical, but that’s the intent. I believe many people are becoming restless with the same things, day in and day out. There’s a call for change, but...

Joy

When I think about times I’ve experienced joy, it’s the smaller things in life that come to mind. A moment when I’m working with a client, and I see and feel the dots connect within them is pure joy. I also experience joy when I get an unexpected text, call or visit...

Religion and Spirituality

I have been pondering an issue that arises for me quite often with the work I do as a licensed mental health counselor. The issues of religion and spirituality come up almost daily. I was told in my training not to let my religious or spiritual beliefs enter my work....

Reflection

As defined in the dictionary, REFLECTION is serious thought or consideration. When you reflect on a subject/issue/decision, it takes time. Not only does it take time, it takes a lot of mental energy. Unfortunately not everyone invests their time in reflection. I...

COPING

Coping I believe it's very important for all people to explore how they cope with their emotions and the challenges they face. It's too easy to get caught up in the emotions of a situation, and lose focus of the real issue. When you have an established practice of...

COMMUNITY

What does community mean to you? When I started blogging I wanted it to be a platform for a community of people to learn and grow together. There's power in numbers! The dictionary describes community as a group of people who share common interests or characteristics....

EVOLVE

EVOLVE I will start by saying, I LOVE my “job” as a mental health therapist! It’s really not a job to me - it’s a life purpose. Counseling is actually a huge part of my identity. I wasn't always able to profess my love for the work I did. Before I switched careers, I...

Inspiration

I am a deep thinker. Unfortunately, sometimes thinking so deeply can be a detriment. I have thought so much about what to write about – what to say – that I realized I was blocked. My creative freedom had been taken from me, because I constantly overthought the...

Seeker

I've been reading a book that describes different personality types. There are a handful of descriptions that fit me, but one that fits me really well is a "seeker". I seek to find answers to everyday questions as well as deep philosophical questions. New knowledge...
